Finding Fabric Online

Finding fabric online can seem overwhelming and scary at first.  My experience has been both wonderful and disappointing.  When I first bought fabric online a few years ago, I looked for the cheapest things I could find.  I even bought a "bargain box" of items that I didn't really know what I was getting.  As a result I was disappointed.  The bargain box was filled with fabrics that I wouldn't have chosen for myself.

I started reading sewing blogs to see where others were shopping.  I got some great ideas and courage to purchase online again.  This time I bought only things that I knew I wanted. Customer service was great.  I feel that I recieved quality fabric and it was cut very nicely. I now have several favorite online fabric stores.  The best part is shopping while the kids play at home- not in the isles.

I found this great site called The Fabric Shopper.  She lists online fabric stores as well as what is on sale and when.  I love finding fabric on sale!   http://fabricshopperonline.com/

Zippers!!!

Zippers aren't as hard as they seem.  A little practice and you will have something professional looking.  Pillows, pencil cases, and skirts are good projects to start with. Most common zippers are invisible zippers, side seam zippper, center zipper, recessed zipper.

Search you tube for videos and google tutorials for each zipper name. There are a ton!

Here are a few to get you started.

Book of Mormon Quilt

Here is a beautiful quilt highlighting stories and scriptures from the Book of Mormon.  Melanie Curtis made this quilt.  She is a beginning seamstress who said, "This project made me feel like I could sew.  If I could make this, then anyone could."

This quilt would make a lovely wall hanging or a special blanket to snuggle in during family home evening.  Maybe you could lay on the floor on top of it and talk about one particular story.

What an ispiration!  Well done, Melanie!

Look at these projects!

Jacy shared with us some of the projects she's done recently. Way to go Jacy! The nursing shield is at the back with binky holders in the front - two projects that came from our group - and the t-shirts are an idea she got from her friend's blog: T-shirts

Talking about the shirts Jacy says: "I was afraid the back fabric might fray a bit, so I did use a little bonding web to attach the back fabric edges to the shirt, but that's probably not necessary. I'm just not experienced enough to know. I'm always scared everything will start to unravel! I also stitched around each letter twice... once closely around the shape and once a few millimeters away from the first, just for effect. Not the best sewing ever, but they came out fairly cute, I thought. And they were super easy and fast! And they would be really easy for ANY holiday or special occasion-- shamrocks for St. Patrick's day, hearts for Valentine's, bunnies or eggs for Easter, etc." Thanks for sharing, Jacy!

Keep your ideas and pictures coming. Seeing creativity inspires creativity! Keep it up!

This month - baby dress

Our project for this month is a baby dress/romper and was demonstrated by our own Jacy Asbury at our last meeting.

The pattern is Burda Easy 9650. The sizes do run a little bit big, so that may be something to keep in mind. Talk to Jacy if you'd like to borrow her pattern - she has cut it to the 18month size.

As you can see the pattern allows you to make the baby outfit into a dress or as a romper. It looks like the tops are the same on both versions. So cute. And who is that darling child model?

Thanks Jacy! We also had a demonstration by Lacy Christensen on how to make baby shoes. It was a great meeting.

Stay tuned for more. And for those of you without children, please forgive the all baby/kid projects this month. More variety to come next month.

Keep Creating!

Sewing Idea - Puppet Show Stage

I was over at Stacy Hill's house recently and she showed me an in-the-door puppet show stage that her kids got as a gift. What a great idea to sew on your own! Check it out.

Here's the front:

Here's the back:

And here it is in the doorway with a little munchkin behind it. It's hanging on two little hooks - the kind that you stick on the wall. There are three wooden dowels in the stage that help it keep it's body.

Wanna do it? Create away!

Look who's sewing!

Car seat Organizers by Jan. Great fabric. So cute!

Aprons by Jan and Jenna. Both are done out of a heavier fabric. Totally awesome!

Keep sewing everyone!

January Projects

We met together during the first week of January and had a great time sharing what we have created and going over lots of fun projects. Here are the projects for this month.

1. Receiving blankets! These are really so easy to make. It's just two pieces of fabric sewn together. We went over three different ways to do the binding around the edge. Here is a link to follow!

2. Collapsible Storage Boxes! These seem a bit trickier and Camille shared her thoughts on how to cut the board that goes inside. Here is the link. So cute.

3. Car Organizers! These are made to fit behind your drivers seat and passengers seat to hold all sorts of stuff for the people/kids sitting behind. Camille made hers from an outdoor kind of fabric. Very cute. Take a look in her van next time you pass it. Here's the tutorial. (You should definitely use more exciting fabric than they used in this tutorial.)

4. Binky Holders! No link or tutorial for this one. I demonstrated it at our meeting. Here are the basics:
  • Choose a cute ribbon. The kind that are sort of waxy are best. They don't show dirt as much. The completely fabric ones (though cute) are not great.
  • Cut the ribbon to the length you want - 12" is a good length.
  • Burn/melt the ends just a bit to stop fraying.
  • Hammer in the snaps on the ends. One end snaps around the binky. One end snaps around a suspender clip. And you're done. (Except, of course, if your 2-year-old takes a pair of scissors and snips the finished binky holder in half during the demonstration at your house.)
See you all in February!
